Leadership Councils

The Professional Beauty Association (PBA) has four Leadership Councils and a Board of Directors. Each council is made up of dedicated members who have taken an active role in the association. There is a leadership council for each membership section:


Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is made up of three representatives from each of the membership sections. The Board of Directors handles budgeting, endorsement of legislation, strategic planning and other industry-wide issues.

Beauty Professional

(formerly the National Cosmetology Association) – PBA's beauty professional section is dedicated to helping licensed cosmetologists strike a healthy work/life balance. Beauty professional members enjoy resources to inspire creativity and career development and have access to educational events and trade shows to hone their professional skills and business knowledge.



Distributors

PBA's distributor section represents companies whose primary business is purchasing salon, spa, beauty and barber products and reselling those products at wholesale to beauty salons, barbershops and cosmetologists. This section also includes companies that sell beauty products over-the-counter.

Manufacturers

Companies that produce beauty products for sale to wholesalers, distributors and/or salons make up the manufacturer section of PBA. Sales representatives are also eligible for membership in this section. Council members in the manufacturer section participate in and help lead initiatives in PBA led research and other initiative and participate in organizing industry events.

Salons/Spas

PBA's salon/spa section is dedicated to the business issues faced by owners and managers at top salons and spas. Salon/spa members benefit from PBA's advanced business education and connect with other members through networking groups or the listserve. PBA represents salon/spa owner interests on Capitol Hill and supplies them with valuable business blueprints to help them in their businesses.

Distributors Council



President: Edwin Neill III

Edwin Neill III was named Neill Corporation's CEO in 2009, after serving as president for four years. In this role, Edwin is responsible for the overall vision and strategy of the company, focusing on the core salon and spa-related businesses, including the primary business as an Aveda Distributor, Extended Technologies®, designers of SpaBiz® and SalonBiz® software and Etopa®.

Edwin III began working with Neill Corporation in 1976 in the distribution center, which was then located at a small storefront in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A job selling Aveda and Paul Mitchell in Metairie, LA, followed before Edwin began school. Immediately after graduating, Edwin began practicing commercial litigation at the New Orleans law firm of Stone Pigman, where he practiced for six years.

Edwin returned to the family business in 1997 in the role of Executive Vice President where he was responsible for overseeing the financial growth of the company, under his father, Edwin Neill II. In 2001, Edwin became Chief Financial Officer; since then, Edwin's guide and leadership has been integral to Neill Corporation's growth to a globally-reaching company, with extensive business and product offerings and customers around the world.

Edwin currently serves on the Advisory Board of the Tulane Family Business Center and is President of the International Spa Association Foundation. Neill received both a bachelor's degree and a law degree from Louisiana State University, where he was a senior editor of the Louisiana Law Review. He received an M.B.A. from Tulane University. Vice President: Peter Garzone

After college, Peter entered the financial industry as a securities salesman for a small brokerage firm, which he eventually owned at age 26. He sold the firm to associates and entered the family jewelry manufacturing business.

Peter had previously helped his wife open her first salon. After being involved in the salon business, he realized that the salon industry was where he wanted to spend his professional career. The salon had the good fortune to associate itself with a new, fashion-forward company named Sebastian International. Peter approached Sebastian to ask for local distributorship opportunities and he became a Sebastian distributor-a relationship that lasted for over 27 years. After 15 years in business, Professional Salon Services Inc began to add non-competing lines, to get to where the company is today: offering products in all categories with supporting education.




Sydney Berry

Sydney Berry has been with Salon Services & Supplies for nearly three decades. Joining the company in 1980 as its first business consultant, Sydney quickly climbed the ranks to sales manager to general manager, and eventually president. Along with George Learned, Sydney and her husband Miles purchases Salon Services & Supplies Inc. in 1997.

As a licensed cosmetologist, and a former salon owner, Sydney embraced the opportunity to interact with a broad range of people, which has built Salon Services & Supplies into a distinctive force in the Pacific Northwest. She has been actively involved in the beauty industry for over thirty years. Her commitment to the salon industry is demonstrated by Salon Service's continual investment to provide education to its constituents. At the beginning of her distribution career, Sydney developed a networking group, which continues today, to help salon owners grow their business through shared strengths and camaraderie.

Sydney's family includes her husband Miles; children Stacy, Jeremy and Tiffany and grandson Kanon.




Josh Hafetz

President of Raylon Corporation, Josh Hafetz has played many roles within the industry, including Regional Sales Manager for ISO in California and Raylon's Director of Sales. Josh's passion for the beauty industry is rooted in his enjoyment of the incredible people that make it so amazing. He regularly provides educational outreach to stylists and salon owners to help them achieve greater financial and personal success in their careers. Before his appointment to the Board of Directors, Josh served on the Distributor Leadership Council and PBA's Governing Council and hopes to continue to contribute to the future success of the industry.




Cynthia Heisser

Melanie Koroyan-Kopeikin

Melanie Koroyan-Kopeikin has spent the past 30 years in the professional beauty industry. While completing her undergraduate and graduate studies she worked in a full service salon and spa as a manager and make-up artist before starting her career as a distributor for top professional brands for nearly 20 years. She led the Strategic Trade Development Department at Sebastian International before being promoted to Director of Business Development for The Wella Corporation (P&G Professional). Melanie founded People in Beauty®, a consulting and executive search firm for the beauty industry, in 2006 and continues to work closely with the industry’s top international brands.




Steve Neumaier

As a lifelong Rochester, New York resident Steve started the distributorship with his father in 1976 and was the first the Goldwell distributorship in the United States in 1982. Goldwell of New York currently services 3,200 salons in the Upstate, New York market with 18 DSC's, 4 professional stores and 54 total employees. The company has been recognized as a Rochester Top 100 company for 4 years. Goldwell of New York was also listed as an INC Magazine top 5,000 company in 2008.

Steven has been married to his wife Maureen for 18 years and they have two children: Anna (11) and Thomas (6). In addition to his role as President at Goldwell of New York, Steven is actively involved with Junior Achievement and his church.




Renee Shakour

Renee Shakour is the executive vice president of Essential Salon Products. She is responsible for E.S.P.'s marketing, education and oversees the Salon Concepts stores that are located throughout New England.

Renee earned her BA in business from Menlo College in California. After graduating she worked for Price Club in the marketing department for several years before returning to the family business of R.G. Shakour, Inc. At R.G. Shakour, Renee began as an account executive and has moved through the ranks to her current position at E.S.P.

Renee is the daughter of Jon Shakour and lives in Worcester, New Hampshire.




Max Wexler

President of Beauty Craft and 40-year industry veteran, Max Wexler has been involved in all aspects of sales and marketing for Beauty Craft. Max worked his way through school at the University of St. Thomas by selling beauty supplies, achieving a bachelor's degree in Political Science before receiving his Juris Doctor degree from Hamline University Law School. After practicing law for six years, while simultaneously continuing his sales career with Beauty Craft, Max eventually decided to focus on expanding Beauty Craft.

Max has been married to Marianne for 33 years and has three sons, Adam, Ian and Benjamin. Marianne, Adam and Ian are all active in the family business.

Manufacturer Council

President: Harlan Kirschner

Harlan Kirschner started in the professional beauty industry in 1979 working for a master distributor. He started The Kirschner Group, Inc in 1984 by acquiring the Powers Group and has expanded their business to be a worldwide sales organization. The Kirschner Group has acquired some of America's premier sales rep companies like The Wild Company, The Perlman Group, Rogers and Jones along with Hass-Ury sales associates. The Kirschner Group, Inc covers all 50 states with a staff of 37 sales representatives. Five years ago The Kirschner Group, Inc launched their international division and now covers all of Europe, Asia and Latin America.

Harlan has had the privilege to serve on previous BBSI boards of directors for many years along with being the treasurer for the Western Beauty Rep Association for the last 15 years. Harlan has also served on numerous panels and committee's for the American Beauty Association, the current Professional Beauty Association and the past Beauty and Barber Supply Institute. Harlan is married with two grown children, one of which has now entered into the beauty business.




Kevin Barrett

Kevin's leadership, extensive sales & sales planning experience has been key to shaping Fromm's reputation, performance and growth for over 21 years. Following formative experiences with Atari, Proctor & Gamble and Helene Curtis, Kevin joined Fromm in 1989. Since, its sales have multiplied many times, as Kevin spearheaded many successful strategic and sales initiatives. Kevin has been instrumental in launching and growing powerful Fromm brands including Fromm Premium shears, Andre salon and hair apparel, Colorsafe and Softees towels, Diane essentials, Mebco combs and its newest acquisition Perfect Results, a multicultural hair care brand.

Kevin is active with all segments of the beauty industry, participating or leading salon professional as well as multicultural initiatives. Under his leadership, Fromm has created outstanding store programs and highly cooperative relationships with customers. Kevin is known as a dedicated advocate of all that's good and important to the industry.

Kevin is a father of 3, a supporter of the Evans Scholarship Foundation (WGA), his church and many community projects.

Brian Graham

Brian Graham is Chief Executive Office of NIOXIN Research Laboratories, Inc., the worlds' leading manufacturer of natural solutions for fine and thinning hair. Prior to this role, Brian served as vice president of marketing for eight years.

Before starting his career with NIOXIN, Brian worked in the field of medical rehabilitation. His natural attraction to NIOXIN stems from his passion for helping others look and feel their best.

Brian received his Bachelor of Science degree from Georgia Southern University before completing his P.M.D. at Harvard University.

Brian is the eldest son of Eva Graham, NIOXIN Founder and Chairman. He currently lives in Atlanta with his wife and three children.

Frank (FJ) Liguori

Frank comes from a family that has deep roots in the beauty industry. His mother was a hairdresser and a platform artist. His father was a sales consultant, became the president of the salon division at LaMaur and later went on to found the company Scruples. Frank has been attending beauty shows since he was old enough to walk.

With over 24 years experience working in the industry, Frank Liguori has had the opportunity to be involved with nearly every aspect at the manufacturing level. After graduating from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Business Management, he started working in the family owned business, Scruples Professional Salon Products in 1984.

Beginning with the customer service area, Frank has been in contact with distributors and salons nationwide and from several parts of the globe. He has great knowledge of the logistics of the distribution game. Other duties over the years have included marketing, accounting, major beauty shows, as well as trade shows. Today he is a member of the Scruples financial board and is involved with the overall strategic planning of the company.




Ken Russo

Marc Spilo is President of Spilo Worldwide, founded in 1942 by Charles G. Spilo. Spilo is a Manufacturer & Master Distributor of beauty products to the Professional Beauty Industry. Marc joined the Company in 1977. Beginning in the warehouse and progressing through all departments, working hands-on to expand his knowledge and experience, he has been instrumental in expanding the company from a small "mom and pop" organization in the 70's to an internationally recognized leader in the beauty industry for the 21st Century. Scott Buchanan began his career in the beauty industry as an apprentice in a Long Island salon. Today, he owns three salons: a 2,800-square-foot salon and spa on New York's fashionable Columbus Avenue; an active, full-service high-end Aveda concept salon near Columbia University; and a 2500-square-foot Aveda lifestyle salon and spa amidst the glam and bustle of New York's Upper Eastside. Scott makes it a priority to give back to the industry that he holds dear, regularly leading Aveda Business College seminars such as "Front Desk Systems" and "Measuring Business Profitability." In addition, his artistic team travels the US teaching innovative trends for the salon environment and has done multiple makeover shows, including The Opera Winfrey Show, among others. They are also the leaders of many New York fashion week shows, and within the Aveda Network.




Vice President: Marilyn Ihloff

Marilyn opened her salon in 1980, with a staff of six. Now, with her sons sharing ownership, her business has grown to three full service salons and spas in Tulsa and Norman, Oklahoma, and a salon in Kansas City. The four salons employ 155 people and are all Aveda Lifestyle locations.

The salons have been voted "Best of Tulsa" yearly and have been on the Salon Today 200 Fastest Growing Salons in America four times. Marilyn and her team are active in the community, with the team raising $90,000 in 2008 for community projects. Marilyn was voted 2008 Oklahoma Small Business Person of the Year by the Small Business Administration and represented the state nationally. Secretary: Kendall Ong

Kendall has been a hairstylist for 29 years. He worked with Vidal Sassoon Salons and Academies for 20 years, 17 as a manager. He managed their San Francisco salon and Education Center as well as opening and managing their Scottsdale and Washington, DC salons. Kendall's love of creating beautiful hair and passion for educating has taken him around the world, from Hong Kong to Chicago and New York to Singapore. He has taught at Vidal Sassoon's London Academy, Davies Mews School and their Santa Monica Academy.

A media spokesperson for the past 25 years he has been in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Allure, Cosmopolitan and Entertainment Tonight to name a few and is regularly featured on Good Day Arizona and Arizona Midday.

Currently he is one of the owners of Mane Attraction Salon, where he oversees their internal training program. Mane Attraction was recently named as one of the Top 200 Salons in the country for the second year in a row by Salon Today as well as one of the 30 Hottest Salons in the U. S. by Color and Style.

Larry Curtis

Larry Curtis is the founder of one the nation's most prestigious cosmetology schools, owner of one of America's 200 Hottest Salons, business consultant and renowned speaker. Larry has the experience and qualifications to help stylists reach their goals and dreams. In 1987 after graduating from college with a degree in business, Larry and his wife Sherri, a stylist and makeup artist, started their first salon.

Through smart business practices and incredible customer service, they expanded to three salons, one of which was named to Salon Today's 200 Hottest Salons list. After becoming disappointed with the quality of new applicants at the salons, Larry decided to make a difference by starting his own cosmetology school, the result of which is Taylor Andrews.

Taylor Andrews currently has nearly 500 students at four locations in Utah. Larry's passion for guiding students and stylists to success has led to the "Mission Possible" series of salon success CD's which cover a wide range of topics from Success to Marketing and Customer Service.




Daired Ogle

A native Texan, Daired Ogle opened his first salon in 1978 and later expanded to include five spa treatment rooms. Today, with approximately 100 employees, Daireds Salon, Spa Pangea, Med Spa, Conference Centre & Café is the only facility of its kind in the Southwest. The 17,500 sq ft facility offers all the services of a destination spa, packaged in a convenient urban setting providing guests everything but an overnight stay. The concept offers treatments from around the world to create a menu broader than a typical day spa.

While running his first salon, Daired also owned a chain of video rental stores which he sold to Blockbuster in 1996. Upon returning full-time to the salon, he found it no longer possessed the professional atmosphere he believed it once had. Although unpopular with many employees, Daired implemented mandatory drug testing and a New Talent program. "The New Talent program tests employees' dedication to their profession and guest service," says Ogle. "And drug testing, back then and even today, is a hot button in this industry."

Current hot buttons for Ogle include the fight for the Cosmetology Tax Fairness and Compliance Act, and the fight against both breast cancer and domestic violence. Daired has been honored with numerous industry and business awards. He is a member of the Professional Beauty Association, The International Spa Association and local Chambers of Commerce.




Jan Seybold

Jan was honored to receive the 2004 Spirit of TSA award, was co-chair of the TSA Chicago Learning Lounge and has participated and volunteered for the annual Welcome to Our World event in Washington, D.C. Jan has organized local salon owner networking breakfasts in Milwaukee and is currently serving as a committee member for Symposium.

Her salon, Carenza, was recognized by Salon Today magazine in 2006 as one of the top 5 for Salon for the year and has been listed as a Salon Today Top 200 Salon.




Oliver Steinnagel

A third generation hairdresser, Oliver has been involved in the salon industry all his life.

He began his career at Sassoon’s flagship academy in Santa Monica, CA. and was fortunate to travel with Paul Mitchell and Jean Bra as a guest artist before becoming an educator, platform artist and editorial stylist for the Wella Corporation for 10 years. Oliver and his wife, Wendy, now own a full-service salon that employs 40 and is the only Intercoiffure salon in Kansas. Oliver sits on PBA’s Best Practice Club (BPC) Government Affairs committees, the Membership Committee for Intercoiffure US and Canada, and has served as a NAHA judge.




Rowena Yeager

Rowena began her career in the hair industry over 20 years ago and opened Studio Wish - Salon & Color Café in Streetsboro, Ohio. Rowena started her educational career working for colour manufacturer Actyva and became an educator for a large chain of salons. Exploring other avenues of hair, she joined Graham Webb in 1998 as part of the National Design team.

Rowena has won several Awards in her career: "Best Educational Presentation" by the State Board of Cosmetology Indiana for her stage work with Graham Webb in 2001, Small Business Person of the Year by the Streetsboro Chamber of Commerce in 2005, as well as the PBA Spirit Award in 2007. Her salon has been named the #1 color salon in the Akron Canton area for 2008, pictured in Salon Today Magazine during the "Salon of the Year 2001" contest, and was named one of the "Top 200 Salons" in Salon Today Magazine 2005, 2006,2008 and 2009.

In 2002 Rowena joined PBA's predecessor association, TSA, and has continued to be very active in the organization by helping to better our industry through networking with salons throughout our country as well as Canada. She has been on the planning committee for the 2007 and 2008 PBA symposium and attends many seminars gathering education and technology ideas to keep in front of our ever changing business community, She enjoys sharing her business skills with other salon owners and managers to help them better their business practices and grow the beauty industry as a whole. As Co-Owner of a Hair Base Salon in Chicago, a family run business for more than 30 years, Graciela's job is multi- faceted. Receiving a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois, her primary goal is to use her educational background in marketing to grow, manage, and use strategic public relations to grow her business. Graciela still works behind the chair three to four days a week because of her love for her craft and takes her responsibility for her 12 employees very seriously. She has served in multiple industry associations throughout the years, giving her the opportunity to share her passion and knowledge of the working professional with the many facets of beauty industry.




Vice President: Beth Hickey

Beth Hickey is a twenty-six-year veteran licensed cosmetologist, former salon owner and manufacturer, salon and spa industry advisor, and product development consultant to manufactures and distributors across the globe. Her area of expertise covers the spectrum of nails, skin, hair and body. Beth is the editor of "500 Beauty Solutions" and "1001 Beauty Solutions" and has been seen on numerous TV programs, including "The Oprah Winfrey Show," "Joan Rivers - Can We Talk Show," "Our Home" and others. She is also the author of "New Business: How To Get It, How To Keep It."

Beth believes that education is the foundation of all growth and success. She makes it a point to never stop learning and to see the endless opportunities that the beauty and spa industry offers.




Secretary: Steve Ukes

Steve Ukes has been a salon professional for more than 30 years and still loves what he does. A salon owner for more than 25 years, Steve has also held industry roles of stylist director, educator, and, for the last nine years, cosmetology Subject Matter Expert, writing state board theory and practical exams for 17 states. He currently works as an educator in St. Paul and enjoys working with and training future industry professionals. Steve also looks forward to working one day a week behind the chair to stay connected to his clients.




Marcia Bird

A licensed beauty professional for 32 years, Marcia has had the opportunity to work in several sectors of the industry, including salons, manufacturers and cosmetology schools. She has held various education positions with manufacturers such as Regional Education Manager for Helene Curtis Inc., National Operations Manager for Schools and Chain Salons for the Wella Corporation and Senior Manager of Education for Wella North America. Marcia is an advocate for students and professionals and believes in being involved in trade associations that continue to strengthen and enhance our industry. In addition to her role at PBA, Marcia serves as co-chair for the Cosmetology Educators of America (CEA). Marcia has a Bachelor of Science degree in occupational education and believes in offering quality education throughout our industry.  In 2009 she was selected as the 2009 NF Cimaglia Educator of the Year by Milady Publishing and CEA. Marcia was acknowledged for her contributions to the professional standards of educational excellence along with her involvement in community service.




Marlene Bridge

In her 30+ years in the professional beauty industry Marlene has experienced many facets of our industry. From salon owner to educator and distributor, Marlene joined the National Cosmetology Association's educational committee before serving on the NCA Board of Directors, and now the PBA Board of Directors. She has also been a member of the PBA distributor section for more than 20 years.

Marlene has been promoting professionalism and education a distributor in the U.S. for more than three decades and has traveled internationally as an educator sharing knowledge. It's her passion for the industry that has led her on her journey to share her knowledge with others.




Mark Goodman

Mark has been a cosmetologist for 32 years and a salon owner since 1981. His salon has been voted The Best of Hilton Head for several years. He is a past president of South Carolinas Association of Cosmetology Salon Professionals and serves on their Fashion and Education Committee. An NCA member since 1978, he is a member of NCA Hair America and served as a designer on several of the past design teams. He has served on the NCA Board of Directors since 2001 and now is proud to serve the members as the NCA section president. He believes that belonging to a professional association is the most important thing that we can do for our careers and lives.




Sandi Holland

A licensed cosmetologist since 1968 and co-owner of Head Liners Salon & Spa for 27 years, Sandi Holland has been involved in NCA since she was a student. She was a member of the 1992 Fall/Winter and 1993 Spring/Summer Design Team, was Americas Educator in 1989 and has been a volunteer leader for more than a decade, serving on the NCA Board/Beauty Professional Council since 2000. In addition, Sandi has been very involved in the CUT IT OUT / Salons Against Domestic Abuse Fund since its inception in 2003. She enjoys working with young professionals and watching them grow as individuals and salon professionals.




James Jordan

James Jordan has spent more than 20 years in the industry, developing expertise in multiple positions. As the Global Education Development Manager for KMS California, James Jordan develops and designs education strategies, technical content and online education. As co-owner and working hairdresser at Matthew Ray Salon, he stays connected to the industry and its working professionals. James is well known in the industry as an enthusiastic educator, a passion which started from volunteering at Schwarzkopf events. He soon progressed to a full-time position before moving to the East Coast to join the Wella USA team before moving to KMS. James is looking forward to helping licensed and future cosmetologists strike a healthy work/life balance by sharing the resources available through PBA.




Georg Schmieder

Georg Schmieder is an American Board Certified Master Hair Colorist. Along with owning one of the premier, award-winning color and hair salons in the Boston area, Georg has worked for many years as a color educator and platform artist for one of the biggest color companies in the world. His salon recently received the 2010 Readers Choice Award for Best Color and Hair salon and Gold for the region.

Georg was the past president of the National Cosmetology Association of Massachusetts before joining the National Cosmetology Association as a Director. Georg is a native of Cologne, Germany and joined the U.S. beauty industry in 1991. He is honored to be part of PBA's NCA leadership council and is looking forward to being part of the growing association.
