Leadership Update
A new group of dynamic leaders have stepped up into new leadership roles on PBA's Governing and Leadership Councils this fall.
First, PBA would like to recognize our four outgoing Governing Council leaders for their extraordinary service and dedication to this industry:
Bill Gray
Prill Gray & Associates
Fort Lauderdale, FL
Bill Ranney
Creative Salon Concepts
Parsippany, NJ
Melissa Yamaguchi
Yamaguchi Salon and Spa
Ventura, CA
George Schaeffer
OPI Products, Inc.
N. Hollywood, CA
Since all Governing Council members serve two-year terms, four new members join the Governing Council. They are:
Sydney Berry
Salon Services
& Supplies, Inc.
Renton, WA
John Galietti
Xena's Beauty Company
New York, NY
Josh Hafetz
The Raylon Corporation
Reading, PA
Jeanne Matson
Clairol Professional,
a division of P&G
Stamford, CT
PBA would also like to recognize our outgoing Salon/Spa Leadership Council member for his outstanding years of service:
Richard Calcasola
Maximus
New York, NY
The Distributor Leadership Council and Salon/Spa Leadership Council each have one new member:
New Distributor LC Member
Lori Silverstein
Peninsula Beauty Supply
Burlingame, CA
New Salon/Spa LC Member
Kendall Ong
Mane Attraction
Phoenix, AZ
As an OTC owner, Lori is the first DLC member from a non-traditional distribution channel. Her appointment illustrates the board's commitment to welcoming OTCs to the association. "The beauty industry has changed. There simply aren't as many full-service distributors, and the retail/OTC segment is growing exponentially," says Lori. "I am excited to play an instrumental role in the association, strengthening all areas of membership, and really vocalizing the needs of my segment."
Kendall has been an active salon/spa section member. He started the Phoenix networking group, which is one of the association's strongest regional groups. He has also been active in government affairs, reaching out to Arizona politicians and participating in Welcome to Our World in DC. The Salon/Spa Leadership Council is excited to welcome his energy and enthusiasm.
Leadership Nomination Process
Each September, PBA's Leadership Councils appoint a nominating committee to oversee the nomination and election of the following year's open Leadership Council positions. The path to becoming a PBA Leadership Council member begins with a simple application of interest submitted by a PBA member. Current board members who have not met their term limits (five two-year terms) and are interested in staying on the board must also submit an application. This application is then blindly reviewed by the section's nominating committee.
Each nominating committee presents a slate of candidates equal to or greater than the number of openings on each Leadership Council (five in odd years, four in even years). Each PBA member then receives a ballot by mail to vote for their section's Leadership Council representatives.
As in any election process, the goal is to pick the people best qualified for the job. Submitting an application to become a Leadership Council member doesn't guarantee placement, but it does give each member an opportunity to be considered by the Nominating Committee. And, of course, becoming a Leadership Council member isn't the only way to become involved in PBA. There are a number of growing PBA committees and taskforces that members can join.
If you are interested in becoming a PBA Leadership Council member-or would like to become involved on a committee or taskforce-please contact Samantha Alvis, Membership Sections Director, at samantha@probeauty.org or 800-468-2274 x117.
