One of the most common misconceptions in the hair extension world is that keratin smoothing treatments cannot be used on hair extensions. While that is often true due to pH imbalances and the sensitivity of processed hair, I recently discovered a breakthrough that has shifted my perspective entirely. After working with a client whose extensions were severely damaged after a vacation, I found myself searching for a solution that could deeply hydrate and repair her hair without compromising its integrity.
Enter the Pure Brazilian Keratin Smoothing System—specifically, the formaldehyde-free CLEAR Treatment. This product line has exceeded my expectations in every way, offering a powerful, yet gentle, approach to smoothing and reviving extensions.
Understanding the chemistry: Why pH matters
When it comes to any chemical treatment, especially those involving keratin, understanding pH is crucial. Unlike natural hair that is attached to the scalp and receives natural oils and hydration, extensions are more vulnerable to drying out, due to their pre-processing and lack of natural moisture. Because of this, products with a low, balanced pH are essential for maintaining the health and longevity of hair extensions.
Both the ORIGINAL and CLEAR formulations from Pure Brazilian fall within the ideal pH range of 2.5 to 5.5. This makes them safe for use on extensions, as they help maintain the chemical balance of the hair without causing excessive dryness or damage. I personally love the ORIGINAL formula, but since I am based in California where methylene glycol is banned, the CLEAR version provides an incredible alternative that complies with local regulations while still delivering beautiful, smooth results.
What sets Pure Brazilian apart?
A key differentiator of the Pure Brazilian Smoothing System Hair Management instead of smoothing is its step-by-step process, particularly the first step: the Anti-Residue Shampoo, which has a pH of 9 to 10. This clarifying shampoo is designed to open the hair’s cuticle and prepare the strands for optimal absorption of the keratin treatment. However, for extensions—especially those that are already dry—I recommend a slight modification. Instead choose Pure Brazilian’s Anti-Frizz Daily Shampoo, with a gentler pH of 5.5 to 6.5, to cleanse the hair without stripping it of moisture.
The CLEAR solution itself is formulated with clean ingredients, offers UV protection and—unlike traditional keratin treatments—does not reduce curl, making it a versatile option for a wide range of hair types and textures. In other words, after a CLEAR treatment, your client can wear her hair smooth, wavy, curly or even coily—without frizz!
Application adjustments for hair extensions
As a stylist, I pride myself on following directions meticulously. However, working with extensions often requires thoughtful adjustments to accommodate the unique structure and needs of the hair. Here’s how I adapted the CLEAR application process specifically for extensions:
- Shampoo with Anti-Residue (or Anti-Frizz Daily) Shampoo.
Adjustment: For extensions that are particularly dry or porous, I opt for the Anti-Frizz Shampoo to gently cleanse the hair while maintaining moisture. - Towel dry thoroughly.
Adjustment: Since extensions hold onto water longer than natural hair, I minimally towel dry to keep some moisture in the hair for easier product absorption. - Apply the CLEAR Solution using a dabbing motion.
Adjustment: Instead of the recommended dabbing technique for extensions, I use an X-pattern motion to ensure full saturation of each extension. While less is more for natural hair, I find that extensions benefit from a slightly more generous application, due to their processed nature. - Rinse for 3 to 5 minutes.
Adjustment: I extend this step to 5 to 10 minutes to account for the porosity of extensions and ensure no residual product is left behind, which could hinder the smoothing process. - Blow dry and flat iron (5 to 7 Passes at 350°F)
Adjustment: I reduce the heat to 290°F and limit passes to four, which is sufficient to seal in the treatment without causing heat damage. The result? Smooth, soft extensions that look and feel brand new. - Optional final shampoo with Pure Brazilian Anti-Frizz Daily Shampoo
Adjustment: I always include this step to gently cleanse the hair one last time and remove any product buildup. - Blow dry and style as desired.
No adjustments needed here—just style as desired!
Educating clients: The “Frame” of hair extension maintenance
After seeing the incredible results from the smoothing treatment, I decided to test out the full range of Pure Brazilian styling products—and I was delighted! When it comes to extension care, I often talk to my clients about “The Frame”—a concept that outlines the foundational products necessary for maintaining long-lasting, healthy extensions.
Just as every house has a frame, every extension care routine should start with a strong foundation: a high-quality shampoo and conditioner, followed by three essential styling products. These include:
- Pure Brazilian Leave-In Conditioner with Keratin
This spray-on product is a game changer. It repairs split ends, hydrates the cortex and seals the cuticle—critical benefits for chemically processed extensions. It also detangles effortlessly, leaving hair soft and manageable. - Pure Brazilian Silk Smoothing Balm
My personal favorite, the G.O.A.T. of styling products. It smooths even the unruliest hair, provides heat protection, enhances texture and shields against environmental stressors that lead to frizz. - Pure Brazilian’s Award-Winning Shine Ultra Light Nourishing Oil
True to its name, this oil is incredibly light. It’s color-safe, 100% vegan and offers heat protection—an absolute must for maintaining the softness and luster of extensions without weighing them down.
All three of these products work in harmony to help clients maintain their extensions at home—especially those who travel often or are hard on their hair.
A bonus product worth highlighting: Pure Brazilian Anti-Frizz Daily Leave-In Serum
While “The Frame” initially consisted of three key styling products, I’ve recently added a fourth—the Pure Brazilian Anti-Frizz Daily Leave-In Serum. This product comes in an impressive 13.5 oz bottle, which is virtually unheard of for a retail serum. It’s keratin-infused, lightweight and offers both heat protection and frizz control. I’ve started referring to this as the fourth pillar in my foundation of extension care, as it enhances shine, softness and manageability without creating buildup.
The final result: New Out-of-the-Package Hair
After completing the Pure Brazilian CLEAR treatment and introducing my client to the Pure Brazilian styling line, the transformation was undeniable. Her extensions were not only revived—they looked and felt better than they had in months. The custom shadow root I had created two months earlier remained perfectly intact, and the hair had that unmistakable “new out of the package” feel that every client loves.
Closing thoughts
As a seasoned stylist who specializes in hair extensions, I’ve learned that customization is key to providing exceptional service. Not all products are created equal, and not all clients—and their hair—require the same application. Pure Brazilian’s Keratin Smoothing System has quickly become one of my go-to solutions for reviving and maintaining extensions without compromising their integrity.
Whether you’re dealing with dry, brittle hair post-vacation, or you’re simply looking for a long-lasting smoothing treatment that works with extensions instead of against them, the CLEAR option by Pure Brazilian is an in-salon treatment worth exploring. It’s gentle, effective and provides the flexibility needed to tailor the treatment to each individual client’s needs.
If you’re a stylist looking to elevate your services or a client searching for a salon-quality treatment that works wonders on extensions, I highly recommend giving Pure Brazilian’s CLEAR system a try. It’s professional-grade care—reimagined for real-world results.
